Designing for Impact:
Enhancing the AbleTo Coaching Platform

Description

As the product design owner for AbleTo's Coaching platform, I led the end-to-end design process for the Coaching Home screen - the central hub where clients engaged with the 8-week coaching program. This design aimed to streamline the user experience, making it easier for clients to access upcoming sessions, track weekly activities, and manage their scheduling.

Role

Product discovery, concept testing, UX research, end-to-end designing, user testing, handoff and support

Understanding the problem

For this dashboard design, I took a cross-functional, collaborative approach to fully understand the problem space.

I kicked things off with a discovery phase involving:
👥 Product managers to align on business goals
👷 Engineers for technical constraints
🔬 Data analysts for insights on current usage
💬 In-depth user interviews

By prioritizing collaborative problem understanding upfront, I ensured the redesign targeted the right problems in an aligned, user-centric way.

Exploration and discovery

With the problem space defined, it was time to explore potential solutions through:
✅ Internal research review
✅ Competitive analysis
✅ Stakeholder interviews
✅ User-centric design principles
Understanding that the end-users and stakeholders play a crucial role in shaping the success of the design, I conduct interviews to capture their perspectives, preferences, and needs. This multi-pronged approach allowed me to uncover opportunities aligned with business goals and user needs.

Concept testing

By designing multiple potential solutions in wireframes and low fidelity mockups, I'm able to present viable directions for testing. These tests and design critiques are put in front of three groups of participants:
👥 Stakeholders
🎨 Design team
👨‍💻 Users

Once I have a direction in mind and validated, I have a plan to move forward, potential problems identified to work through, and data to back up my direction. This comprehensive approach allowed me to refine and iterate on the concept based on real user feedback and stakeholder input. The design team's valuable insights and feedback played a crucial role in the iterative design process, resulting in a solution that effectively addressed user needs and preferences. By gathering diverse perspectives through user testing and stakeholder input, we could refine and iterate on concepts backed by real feedback.

Iteration & User Testing

Taking the time to analyze and synthesize feedback from concept testing allowed me to identify the design direction and prioritize enhancements that would have the most significant impact on both the business and users. This iterative approach ensured that the experience not only aligned with AbleTo's business objectives but also provided an intuitive user experience, ultimately improving user satisfaction and achieving business goals.

Through multiple rounds of feedback from stakeholders, users, and the design team, I prioritized high-impact enhancements. This leads to final validation including comprehensive user testing tracking interactions, satisfaction, and task completion rates.

Handoff and support

To transition from design to development, I provided the engineering team with easy-to-follow Figma handoff files, including detailed specifications, style guides, and assets. In a collaborative effort, I presented the designs to the engineers, addressing any questions or clarifications they had. Additionally, I worked closely with project managers, assisting them in writing tickets and providing comprehensive documentation for a smooth implementation process.

Any new assets created, I would add to the AbleTo design system. Throughout the development phase, I remained actively involved, offering support and clarifications, ensuring the integrity of the design vision was maintained. By fostering open communication and providing continuous assistance, I facilitated a successful handoff and development process, resulting in the realization of the new AbleTo dashboard according to the user-centered design principles we had established.
