Content Exploration:
Designing AbleTo's Content Hub

Description

As the product design lead, I spearheaded the end-to-end redesign of AbleTo's Explore feature. AbleTo offers a vast content library across its products, but it lacked a centralized hub for users to discover this content. The Explore feature was envisioned as a one-stop-shop for users to access content from all AbleTo products, as well as a platform to showcase new content additions.

Role

Product discovery, concept testing, UX research, end-to-end designing, user testing, handoff and support

PRD

In the ever-evolving landscape of digital products, effective communication between product managers and designers is the cornerstone of successful feature development.

However, all too often, product requirement documents (PRDs) become dense, labyrinthine documents that hinder rather than facilitate the design process. I spend ample time understanding the problem, PRDs, stakeholder interviews, and user needs before starting.

In the wild

For the competitive analysis, I extensively reviewed various companies offering similar Explore features. This in-depth examination provided valuable insights into their strengths and weaknesses, helping me identify opportunities for improvement in our own implementation.

By studying their approaches to simplified information architecture and aesthetically pleasing design, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the industry's best practices. Leveraging these findings, my aim is to craft a user-friendly Explore feature that not only presents content in a clear and intuitive manner but also captivates users with an aesthetically pleasing interface that encourages engagement.

Ideation

During the ideation phase, we focused on generating feature concepts and layouts that seamlessly integrate into the existing product ecosystem. Our primary goal was to maintain a simplified information architecture, ensuring users can effortlessly navigate and discover content within the Explore feature. To achieve this, we leveraged our cross-product universal design system, establishing a cohesive visual language across our platform for a consistent user experience that reduces cognitive load.

Simultaneously, we ensured that the proposed concepts align with our business goals, striking the right balance between user needs and company objectives. By exploring creative directions iteratively, we aim to create a product that enriches user experience, fosters familiarity, drives engagement, and supports business growth.

Concept testing

Conducting concept testing with users is crucial to the success of our new Explore feature. By conducting A/B testing and user feedback early in the development process using Maze.co, I can validate my design assumptions and ensure that the feature aligns with users' needs and expectations. User surveys will enable me to collect quantitative data, giving me a comprehensive understanding of user preferences, pain points, and suggestions for improvement.

Additionally, heat mapping and path analysis will provide valuable insights into user behavior and interactions within the Explore feature, allowing me to pinpoint areas of interest and potential usability bottlenecks. Armed with these user-centric insights, I can refine the feature iteratively, leading to a more polished and engaging product that resonates with our target audience while maximizing usability and overall satisfaction.

Fidelities and Handoff/Support

The iterative process of developing low to high fidelity mockups played a vital role in enhancing our Explore feature. By presenting initial low fidelity mockups to stakeholders, I gathered valuable input and aligned the design with project goals. Engaging in design critique sessions facilitated feedback from cross-functional teams, leading to refinements that addressed usability concerns.

With the mockups now refined and the design direction validated through user testing, I am ready to finalize the Explore feature's detailed designs and hand them off to our engineering team. This transition marks a crucial phase where design support during development becomes paramount.

My close collaboration with the engineering team ensures a seamless translation of the design into a functional product, addressing any implementation challenges that may arise. Moreover, as the feature evolves in the development phase, my agility in providing reactionary design updates plays a pivotal role. Adapting to unforeseen user needs and technical constraints through these updates ensures that the final product not only aligns with the envisioned user experience but also delivers a polished and intuitive Explore feature that meets both user expectations and business objectives.
